How to begin to dissect Marc Jacobs’s Fall 2016 fashion show at New York Fashion Week? There were cloaks, glitzy Deco gowns, ’20s finger waves, neo-goth eye makup, oversize polka dots, and a Lady Gaga appearance, all grounded with teetering platform shoes that could make even Susanne Bartsch balk. Maybe the best way to sum it up is to say that Jacobs really, truly knows how to put on a show, and at the end of an especially confused New York Fashion Week, a little haute drama is something his audience was craving. Good thing Jacobs can turn it out by the ton. Here, the 11 talking points from Marc Jacobs’s complex Fall 2016 collection. 1. The star wattage in Jacobs’s front row could power a small country. Sandra Bernhard, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, Kiernan Shipka, Maggie Gyllenhaal,Emily Ratajkowski, Rachel Feinstein, Debi Mazar, Natasha Lyonne, CL, and Milk all sat in Jacobs’s front row.
2. The interior of the Park Avenue Armory was transformed into a lacquered white circular room with stadium seating, where models emerged from one side and walked around the periphery in a circle.
3. The show began with a sound any iPhone user would instantly recognize: the ding alert for a text message. The bells then rose and fell in pitch for the duration of the show, acting as an ear-splitting chorus that in some way only heightened the silence in the room.
4. Models wore their hair in ’20s finger waves paired with jet black eye makeup done in abstract, smudgy styles.
5. The shoes! Jacobs sent out veritable club kid stompers that drew to mind the designs of Terry de Havilland and John Fluevog crossed with the platforms one would find on today’s underground Scandinavian scene.
6. Kendall Jenner may have walked in the show, but the true star moment came when Lady Gaga, in full hair and makeup, strutted out mid-lineup in a gray coat with fur sleeves and a pussy-bow blouse.
